What Are the Common Problems of a Fully Automatic Color Dispenser?

A fully automatic color dispenser is core equipment for raising colour-matching efficiency and accuracy in coatings, printing, coating application and other fields, but over long-term use, a range of problems commonly appears under the influence of machine condition, consumable characteristics and operating practice, directly limiting colour quality and production efficiency.

Deviation in tinting accuracy is the most prominent common problem. It shows up as a colour difference from the standard sample — visible to the eye or measurable by instrument — during batch tinting, and it mainly has three causes. First, insufficient batch-to-batch stability of the colorant: pigment concentration and dispersion differ slightly between batches, and if the formula parameters are not verified and adjusted in advance, a colour deviation easily results. Second, a drop in the accuracy of the machine’s metering system — worn syringes, out-of-calibration flow meters, ageing colour sensors and the like directly produce errors in the amount of colorant added, which then affects the final colour. Third, a missing consideration of substrate compatibility: different coating substrates such as metal, plastic and wood differ in their absorption of the coating and their gloss requirements, and tinting to a laboratory formula without adjusting for the actual substrate also produces a colour mismatch.

Operational faults are also relatively frequent. Pipe blockage, for example: pigment agglomeration and residual impurities in the colorant clog the colour feed lines, interrupting colorant supply or making the output unstable and ultimately causing uneven colour. Abnormal mixing is equally common — a faulty stirring device or too short a mixing time leaves the colorant and base insufficiently blended, so the colour separates into layers and the sprayed finish looks patchy and uneven. A further long-term risk is missing calibration: some users calibrate once at installation and never re-calibrate afterwards, letting metering error accumulate until colour accuracy keeps declining over time.

Problems caused by consumables and poor maintenance are equally significant. Colorant deterioration is typical: if the storage environment is too hot or too damp, the dispersant in the colorant fails, pigment agglomerates and settles, and it can no longer disperse evenly during tinting, producing colour deviation. Cross-contamination when changing colours is more damaging: if residual old colorant in the pipes and mixing vessel is not thoroughly cleaned when the formula is changed, it mixes into the new formula and causes colour bleed — a problem that shows up especially clearly in light shades. Incomplete cleaning can also contaminate the machine’s sensors, undermining the accuracy of colour detection and further amplifying colour-matching error.

Non-standard operation causes problems too. If operators do not get into the habit of checking formulas regularly, they may enter the wrong colorant ratio, or go straight to batch production without a small trial run, producing a large batch of non-conforming product. Workshop environment fluctuations also affect the machine: large swings in temperature and humidity change the viscosity and behaviour of the colorant, and if the machine is not adjusted for environmental parameters, colour problems appear just the same.

These problems are not inevitable. As long as you establish regular calibration, standardise operating procedures, strictly control consumable quality and take daily equipment maintenance seriously, you can effectively reduce how often they occur, keep the fully automatic color dispenser running steadily and give production reliable support.
