How to Operate a Color Dispenser More Accurately and Efficiently

A color dispenser is the core equipment for precise color matching in coatings, inks, adhesives and other fields. The accuracy of its operation directly determines product consistency, while its efficiency affects production efficiency and material cost control. To get the most out of a color dispenser, four dimensions must be systematically controlled: pre-operation preparation, standardized operation, calibration and maintenance, and error handling.

Pre-operation preparation is the foundation of operational accuracy and must not be neglected. First, match the material characteristics: confirm the compatibility between the base material to be tinted (water-based, solvent-based, specially modified bases, etc.) and the colorants. Different categories of colorants vary considerably in dispersant and pigment systems, and mixing them easily causes floating color and flooding, so choose colorants that match the base material and verify the colorant batch number in advance to avoid color deviation caused by batch differences. Second, carry out a pre-start equipment check: before switching on, check whether the mixing device runs smoothly and whether the weighing sensor drifts; the response can be confirmed by gently touching the sensor. Also clean dried pigment residue out of the colorant lines so that they are unobstructed, with no blockage or leakage. At the same time, check the liquid level in the colorant tanks to avoid drawing in air bubbles when the level is too low, because bubbles interfere with dispensing accuracy and can later cause uneven color. Environmental conditions must also be adjusted in advance: the temperature of the tinting room should be kept at 20-25 °C and the humidity at 40%-60%, to avoid low temperatures making the base material viscous and reducing colorant flowability, or condensation at high humidity contaminating the colorants.

Standardized operation is the core of accuracy and efficiency. When importing a formula, check the colorant model and ratio one by one, and pay particular attention to the order of the colorants in the formula (usually dispensed from the weakest to the strongest tinting strength), so that a reversed order does not lead to poor dispersion. In the dispensing step, rely on the metering device of the equipment rather than estimating by hand, and pre-stir the colorants manually for 1-2 minutes before use to prevent pigment stratification after long standing, ensuring the dispensed concentration matches the formula. After dispensing, operate according to the mixing parameters set on the equipment; mixing speed and time must match the material. For water-based bases, a mixing speed of 1000-1200 rpm for 3-5 minutes is advisable to ensure the colorant disperses evenly with no undissolved color specks; for solvent-based bases, the mixing time can be appropriately extended to avoid uneven mixing caused by high viscosity. The color trial step is key to confirming the color: apply the tinted wet film onto standard card stock, let it dry (24 hours at room temperature, or cured according to material requirements), and then compare under a uniform standard light source (such as a D65 simulated daylight source). Never judge under natural light or indoor lighting, otherwise source deviation can easily lead to a wrong color assessment.

Calibration and routine maintenance guarantee long-term efficiency. The weighing system must be calibrated regularly: calibrate the sensors with standard weights every week to keep the dispensing error within 0.5%, and check the mixing device speed every month, adjusting it promptly when the deviation exceeds 5%. Cleaning the colorant lines is the key to reducing cross-color contamination. When changing colors, flush the lines thoroughly with the appropriate solvent, especially to remove residues of high-concentration pigments such as carbon black and titanium dioxide, so that they do not mix into the new color and make the shade greyish or dull. When the equipment is idle, drain the residual colorant from the lines to prevent it from drying and clogging, and shut off the air supply (for pneumatic equipment) to protect the seals.

Handling errors quickly is the key to improving efficiency. If the color deviates after a trial, first determine the direction of the deviation (for example, too red, too yellow or insufficient lightness), then add a small amount of the corresponding colorant, keeping each addition within 0.1% of the total formula weight. Stir and trial again after each addition, and avoid adding too much at once, which can make the color impossible to recover. At the same time, establish the habit of keeping tinting records: note the amount added and the direction of deviation each time, so that future tinting of the same color shortens trial-and-error time and improves efficiency.

In summary, accurate and efficient operation of a color dispenser is an organic combination of pre-operation adaptation, standardized operation, regular maintenance and rapid error handling. It improves color matching accuracy, reduces material waste and shortens the tinting cycle, providing support for stable production.
